The good thing about working in the area we work in is that with the potential social and political impacts of our work we could be up for a Nobel Peace Prize as well as one for science 😛
Sadly not, i am not a leader in the field as i am at or at least near the bottom of the pile. You have to dedicate your life to research which is not what i plan on doing as i would like to be a teaching fellow (teach at university level). Also it is hard to predict what science will be considered impressive enough to win, sometimes it is a discovery that people have been working towards for some time or a reaction that has made lots of other science easier/possible. It is a common oral exam question for PhD students: who do you think will win the next nobel prize for chemistry? It is tough to answer as many people value lots of different kinds of chemistry.
