• Question: Hello, we are young boys wondering: How much energy is required from the solar cells to heat up your coffee? P.S have you ever done so?

I’ve never done it but lets do the maths!

It takes about 0.09 kWhr of electrical energy to boil one litre of water. If the cells I’m using are 10% efficient and the power of the sun is 1 kW/m2 then our cell output is 0.1 kW/m2. If we wanted to boil the water in 5 minutes then we’ll need 1.08 kW of power and so we will need a solar panel of 10m2!

That’s quite a large solar panel but then boiling water requires quite a lot of energy!
