We want to use sunlight as the energy source to split water to generate hydrogen, or to reduce CO2 into some organic fuels, such as methanol. As compared with solar cell, which can only produce electricity when there is sunligh, this approach can store sunlight in the form of chemical bonding, and can be used upon demand. For example, hydrogen can be stored and used in hydrogen car. First, we need to find a material, which can absorb light, convert light into energetic electrons, and reduce proton into H2, or CO2 into CH3OH. As we can see, these two reactions need proton, and to make this approach sustainable, we will use water as the proton source.
