Modern engines are all based around the Turbine engine. This was developed in England by Sir Frank Whittle. This is what we know today as a modern jet engine. It sucks in air at the front with a fan blade and then multiple rows of fans compress the air to a great pressure. This then goes through a combustion chamber, where the fuel is added and burns. This fires out the back of the engine to produce thrust. As it goes out the back, it turns a turbine blade, which itself powers the front fan blade, so the engine continues to gain power from itself! Very clever!!

Back in WW1 they didn’t have turbine engines available. Instead they used piston engines, much like the ones you have in a car. These are less powerful, but generally smaller and use less fuel than a turbine engine!

Hope that answers your question 🙂
