        Helen Pritchard-Smith answered on 18 Jun 2013:

Due to the type of PhD I am doing (it is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council or EPSRC) as well as Chemical Industry the aim was to create a new type of PhD researcher.
Industry and academia wanted to work together to try and produce more open minded, highly skilled non-super specialised researchers in a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). This intrigued me so i signed up for the Bristol Chemical Synthesis CDT. I was given the choice of 25 different projects and chose this one because i liked how open the project was so i could take it anywhere i wanted and carbon dioxide activation/ applications are something i think is both challenging as carbon dioxide is chemically inert and worthwhile for the global benefits of finding useful applications for greenhouse gases.
