One of the most important challenges we face over the coming decades is how we are going to meet demand for energy and how we will provided it without releasing too much CO2 into the atmosphere. As far as I can tell, all the scientists here in the Energy Zone work on ways of achieving this. So all our work is equally important.

Other than energy, the most important challenges we face are how we are going to feed everybody, how we can get enough clean drinking water for everybody and how to make new antibiotics. All scientific research is important.

I personally don’t think my work is more important than the other scientists in this Zone. There is no one answer to how we’re going to get our energy in the future and most people who work in the area of renewable energy will tell you that the future is going to be a mixture of all the ones we currently have. That’s the only way we’ll reach our energy demand sustainably.

I think answering questions is important, shining light into dark corners of science is what we do so in that way all science is important. Some projects are more speculative (no clear purpose) than others but it means that they haven’t yet found an application. I think this zone contains some really exciting science, I’m scientist gives you a chance to speak to a large group of scientists doing lots of different types of ground breaking science that will have unknown consequences in the future. Everyone is contributing in some way to making a better future for all of us, even if it is not obvious when you first look at their research.
Our work is important to us so hopefully we can make you see why all of our work is important and why you should be interested in it.
